MUSICK/MUSE - MUSICK/ALEXANDER
MUSICK/MUSE

Ransom A. Musick was born 1818, North Carolina, and his wife, E. Kesiah Muse was born 1819 in South Carolina. During the 1840's, Ransom resided on a farm owned by Austin Musick. Also in the 1840 U.S. Population Census of Chambers County, Alabama, there is a couple, the age of Ransom and Kesiah, and two small boys under age five, possibly their sons, residing in the household of Austin Musick. These items indicate a probability that Ransom was the son of Austin Musick, a descendant of the pioneer, George Musick, of Virginia. **See additional notes at end**.

In 1850, Ransom and Kesiah were living in Shelby County, Alabama. They moved to Panola County, Texas, before 1860. The family settled in Cherokee County prior to 1870. Their farm was nine miles west of Rusk near the Neches River in the present-day community of Union Grove.

Ransom and Kesiah had eleven children, all born in Alabama except William, (my grandfather) who was born in Texas.

Here are notes on their children. 1.son,Martin Van Buren, born 1838, married Elizabeth Avery. They lived at Union Grove. Martin died July 24, 1909. 2.son,Daniel (David), born 1840, and his wife, Elizabeth, lived in Cherokee County until after 1870. 3.daughter,Mary Elizabeth (Sis), born 1842, married Riley J. (Dick) Pierce, January 12, 1870. She died january 5, 1907, in Cherokee County. 4.son,James, born 1844. 5.son,Joseph, born 1845, married Sarah F. Langston, July 30, 1868. She was the daughter of Henley and Sarah Langston. Joseph and Sarah lived in Cherokee County until after 1870. 6.son,John M. (Dock), born 1846, married Mary Louisa Pierce, June 25,1868. 7.son,Benjamin Franklin, born December 15, 1847, married, first, Rebecca Ann Stockton, February 5, 1870: married, second, Mrs. Susan Patton Harris, August 23, 1888. He and his families lived in the Mixon Community. He died February 26, 1921. Ben, Rebecca, and Susan are buried in Mixon Cemetery, Texas 8.son, Thomas M. born December, 1848, married Mary E. Neal, December 3, 1868. The couple lived in Cherokee County until 1889, when they moved to Oklahoma Territory. In 1910 they were living in Rogers Mills County, Oklahoma. 9.son, Ransom P., born April, 1852, married Henrietta L. Avery, October 21, 1872. They moved from Cherokee County to Houston County, Texas, after 1900. 10.daughter,Frances (Fannie), born 1854, married, first, Leander (Ike) Northcutt, August 27, 1874; second, John M. Allen, October 19, 1898. She had no children. John and Fannie moved from Cherokee County to Oklahoma Territory about 1900. 11.son,William White (Billie) my grandfather, born October, 1858, married Mary Etta Alexander, April 18, 1889. They moved from Cherokee County to Henderson county, Texas, after 1900.

Ransom and Kesiah Musick moved to the Mixon Community about 1880. Ransom died December 9, 1883, and Kesiah died May 7, 1891. They are buried in Mixon Cemetery, near Jacksonville, Texas.

NOTES:

Musick is of German origin. The German people were the only Caucasoid (white), to befriend the Native Americans.

This is proably where our ancestor obtained an "American" name.

I do not have the "Tribal" names for our ancestor(s), it would be interesting to find it.

Some Native Americans denied their Cherokee ancestry because they perceived this to be a social stigma.

Velma Odell Musick-Marshall (daughter of William White Musick and Mary Etta Alexander) my mother, told me that in 1906 her father, William White Musick, (Billie) and her mother, Mary Etta Alexander, started to the Indian Territory (eastern Oklahoma) during the enrollment period of 1899-1906. They reached Bonham, Texas and Mary Etta refused to continue to Oklahoma. Therefore William White Musick did not enroll under "The Dawes Commission" for benefits of Native Americans.

Two of William White Musick's siblings did go to Oklahoma. They were Thomas M. Musick and wife Mary E. Neal, and Frances (Fannie) Musick-Northcutt-Allen and second husband John M. Allen. The time period was around 1900.

Velma Odell Musick-Marshall often spoke of Uncle Ransom, her father's brother. I obtained E. Kesiah's maiden (tribe?) name from her. She often told me that a Musick married a Muse and this would have been her grandmother, E. Kesiah Muse.

We may be of two Native American tribes. William White Musick was of Cherokee origin, as was one of his parents Ransom A. Musick. His mother E. Kesiah Muse's origin is not known, she may have been Choctaw.
